Director's Welcome

Welcome to, where you’ll find us in the midst of an incredible fall season. As a multidisciplinary contemporary art center situated on the campus of a major research university, the fall semester is always a vibrant time, but especially so now.

Through the end of December, we encourage you to make time to visit a truly revelatory exhibition, Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933–1957. The Wex is one of only three national venues for this critically acclaimed show, and the only one between the coasts. The exhibition showcases the phenomenal impact of this pioneering liberal arts school founded by leading artists and thinkers of the time, whose legacy resonates to this day. From such figures as Josef and Anni Albers, Buckminster Fuller, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Ruth Asawa, and Jacob Lawrence to Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham (the latter three all Wexner Prize recipients), Black Mountain forever changed the course of 20th-century art history.

Eight Ohio State faculty members have designed fall curricula around the exhibition, and over 2,000 visitors (including students) packed the galleries during opening events. Indeed, the spirit of Black Mountain College—experimental, risk-taking, and cross-disciplinary—infuses the Wexner Center’s own DNA and propels our very mission.

The 2016–17 season continues to bring amazing artistry to stage and screen as well, with a recent visit by filmmaker Kelly Reichardt punctuating a retrospective of her films; a conversation between comic artist Garry Trudeau and writer Glen David Gold; and performances by Dave Holland with his quartet AZIZA as well as master musician Ibrahim Maalouf—just to mention a few highlights.

And you won’t want to miss forthcoming visits by This American Life impresario Ira Glass in a dazzling performance with two dancers, or Oscar-winning director William Friedkin, who will discuss his remarkable career following our screening of his 1973 classic, The Exorcist. And Margaret Bodde, executive director of Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation, will also appear at the Wex in connection with our Cinema Revival festival. We also look forward to welcoming back jazz sensation Joshua Redman, as well as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, who returns for the US premiere of a stunning new dance work.

Stay tuned for our member ticket presale December 1–15, 2016—and get ready to leap into the Wex! It’s the perfect moment to join and enjoy priority access to discounted tickets for these and other highlights of our upcoming winter/spring season (just one of many benefits you’ll receive year-round). Our members make all this and so much more possible. What better time to jump in?

With abundant gratitude,

Sherri Geldin
