Her photographs invest people and places at the margins of our society—the clerk at the convenience store, the façade of an abandoned building, a hand-lettered sign with its characters askew—with the simple dignity of recognition. Strauss is committed to making her work accessible far beyond the art world and has just completed her tenth annual outdoor exhibition beneath a Philadelphia underpass. She also seeks to make her working process and ideas available to viewers, and you can follow her comments, view video clips, and see many of her images on her blog.
Read an essay by exhibition curator Bill Horrigan, the director of the Wexner Center's media arts program, and find a complete checklist in the free brochure accompanying the exhibition, available at the Wexner Center and in a PDF version here.
