5000 Feet Is the Best, 2011

Omer Fast: 2001/11

Sat, May 19, 2012Sun, Aug 5, 2012

This exhibition brings together two video works made a decade apart by artist Omer Fast that throw into relief subjects that have helped define a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Fast began CNN Concatenated in 2001 in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. 5000 Feet Is the Best was completed in 2011 for its unveiling to great acclaim at the Venice Biennale. Each of these works focuses clearly on a single subject—media saturation in the case of CNN Concatenated and drone warfare in the case of 5000 Feet Is the Best—while also investigating the shifting interactions of reality and representation. Both also raise questions about storytelling, authenticity, and authorship, as well as about the ways that lived experiences become part of history.

Fast was born in 1972 in Jerusalem, Israel, and lives in Berlin. He received his BA from Tufts University in 1995 and his MFA from Hunter College in 2000. He was the recipient of the 2009 Pries der Nationalgalerie fur Junge Kunst, Berlin, and the 2008 Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art, among other honors. Fast has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2010), Berkeley Art Museum (2009), Museum of Modern Art, Vienna (2007), Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh (2005), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2004), and the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt (2003). His work is in such international collections as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum of Art, Hamburger Bahnhof, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the Consulate General of Israel to the Mid-Atlantic Region.
