Beauty and the Beast

Jean Cocteau, 1946

wex grid image fill

Pure magic! This 1946 French version of the classic story is perhaps the most enchanting live-action fairy-tale ever made, as well as a landmark in fantasy filmmaking.

Some of the astonishing effects in the film, such as the human candelabras, were incorporated into the Disney animation, but nothing has matched the sense of wonder and imagination created by this interpretation. Jean Marais’ sensitive, frightening, and tragic performance as the Beast is astonishingly moving.

In French with English subtitles. Recommended for ages 7 and up. (93 mins., 35mm)
