"A reflective, wise, often hilarious movie"—New York Times—about tobacco. An engaging new personal documentary, Bright Leaves describes Ross McElwee's journey across the social, economic, and psychological terrain of tobacco country. The filmmaker, also known for Sherman's March, concentrates on North Carolina, where his own great-grandfather had created the brand of tobacco known as "Bull Durham." The film presents an autobiographical commentary on the allure of cigarettes and their troubling legacy for that state, as well as on the notion of legacy itself: what one generation passes down to the next.
