Call Her Applebroog

(Beth B, 2016)

Call Her Applebroog

“A vivid snapshot of a still-vital artist late in a still-purposeful life.”—New York Times

The latest project from underground filmmaker and frequent Wex guest Beth B is her most personal yet: an intimate and complex portrait of her mother, acclaimed artist Ida Applebroog. The Bronx child of Orthodox Jews who emigrated from Poland, Applebroog guides us through the provocative drawings, paintings, and private journals that have been her life’s work. With her daughter’s encouragement, she discovers new aspects of former self and the psychological and sexual liberation she’s found through her art. In this look at two artists at the height of their craft, Beth B gains a deeper understanding of her mother while Applebroog develops a newfound appreciation for her own creations. (70 mins., DCP)
