Round out your introduction to Suleiman's filmmaking with these highly regarded earlier works screened in association with the U.S. release of The Time that Remains.

The autobiographical Chronicle of a Disappearance won the award for best first film at the Venice Film Festival. A series of mostly unconnected scenes depict, according to Suleiman, "a journey in search of what it means to be Palestinian." The director appears as E.S., a man who returns to the West Bank after spending 12 years in New York City. (88 mins., 35mm)

Divine Intervention, Suleiman's most widely seen film, follows the daily routine of a man from Nazareth whose girlfriend lives four checkpoints away in Ramallah. A Santa being chased by knife-wielding school kids and a balloon bearing the visage of Yasser Arafat floating over Jerusalem are just two of its darkly comedic moments. (92 mins., 35mm) Divine Intervention begins at 8:40 PM.
