Come Drink with Me Golden Swallow

wex grid image fill

Influential director King Hu's first martial arts film Come Drink with Me is considered by many to be the definitive wuxia pian (or chivalrous swordplay film). The film stars Zheng Peipei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), who reprises her role in the sequel, Golden Swallow. Star Zheng Peipei is best known in the West as Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In Come Drink with Me she plays a female warrior, Golden Swallow, who attempts to rescue her kidnapped brother. (King Hu, 1966; 94 mins.)

Zheng Peipei reprises the role in the sequel, Golden Swallow, but director Zhang Che reverses King Hu's feminine paradigm and places one of the Shaw Brothers' biggest stars, Jimmy Wang Yu, at the film's center as a tormented swordsman. (1968; 108 mins.)
