Darwin’s Nightmare

(Hubert Sauper, 2004)

“[A] harrowing, indispensable documentary.”—New York Times

Nile perch were introduced into Tanzania’s Lake Victoria solely for purpose of export to Europe and Russia, but the fish have destroyed the lake’s ecosystem, leaving local Tanzanians to survive on bones and rotting carcasses. Darwin’s Nightmare turns the perch into a telling example of globalism’s winner-take-all attitude. As its Austrian-born, Paris-based director says, “I could make the same kind of movie in Sierra Leone, only the fish would be diamonds, in Honduras, bananas, and in Libya, Nigeria or Angola, crude oil.” (107 mins., beta SP)
