Director Ayse Polat introduces tonight's feature, winner of three awards at the Swiss-held Locarno Film Festival. En Garde follows a young German girl who is institutionalized because of hyperacusis, a disorder that amplifies surrounding sounds, effectively isolating her from other people. In the home she manages to form a friendship with a Kurdish girl only to find the relationship threatened by an encounter with a new boy. (35mm, 94 mins.)

Cosponsored with Ohio State's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Special thanks to Gregor Hens and to the Goethe Institute, New York.
