Explorers

Joe Dante, 1985

wex grid image fill

A gentle and imaginative look at joys and wonder of childhood, Explorers stars 14-year-olds River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke in their film debuts.

The film follows a misfit trio of best friends as they make a series of discoveries that lead them to build their own makeshift interplanetary spaceship and embark on a secret adventure. The first half of the film plays out like a classic Spielbergian tale of suburban wonder, but things culminate in a pointed encounter with oddball aliens that's pure Dante. (109 mins., 35mm)
