A personal collection of historical stamps from early 20th-century Germany and America is the starting point for At Face Value, an experimental documentary that continues Zachary Formwalt's interest in finding images to represent the immaterial.

In this case, the iconography of stamps becomes a way to illustrate concepts of inflation and value. The stunning imagery combined with readings from Walter Benjamin, Erik Hobsbawm, and conversations with the filmmakers' father elucidate a key moment in world economic history, the decade preceding the Great Depression and World War II. Zachary Formwalt was born in 1979 in Albany, Georgia, and has been living and working in Amsterdam as a resident of the Rijksakademie since 2008. He is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and attended the critical postgraduate program at the Malmö Art Academy in Malmö, Sweden, in 2004 and 2005.
