"You won't find anything else half as entertaining!"—Stuart Klawans, The Nation on The Fallen Idol.

Second feature start time: 8:45 PM. The Fallen Idol has often stood in the shadow of The Third Man, the subsequent collaboration of director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene. As this rerelease makes clear, Idol is itself a formidable film, a powerful and evocative look at the secretive world of adults from an innocent point of view. Greene based the screenplay on his story "The Basement Room," about an ambassador's young son disastrously drawn into the romantic intrigues of the embassy's married butler and housekeeper. With Ralph Richardson, Michele Morgan, and Jack Hawkins. (35mm, 95 mins.) A young Cary Grant returned to his native British soil to star in The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss, the story of a rich man who bets a friend he can live as a poor man on a meager fixed income (16mm, 80 mins).
