Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Howard Hawks, 1953
Classics
Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.
"A landmark encounter in the battle of the sexes! Hawks keeps topping perversity with perversity!"—Dave Kehr
It's hard to imagine Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and the garish color palate of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes looking even more eye-popping and luscious than they always have, but this new 35mm restoration might have pulled it off. One of the sexiest and most subversive musicals in Hollywood history, the film sees Monroe, Russell, and the great director Howard Hawks audaciously upend the premise's hoary idea of gold diggers prowling a cruise ship by turning the film into a vulgar assault on 1950s propriety.
Material girl Monroe gets the film's most iconic musical number with "Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend," and Russell brings the house down by cooing "Ain’t There Anyone Here for Love" while surrounded by a squadron of beefcake bodybuilders concerned only with their workout. (91 mins., 35mm)
