The Legend of Marilyn Monroe

Plus Marilyn Monroe in Newsreels Terry Sanders, 1966

Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.

Fri, July 6, 2012 7 PM

Our summer Marilyn Monroe series opens with one of her most iconic roles and a look at her life on and off the screen.

In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one of the sexiest and most subversive musicals in Hollywood history, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and the great director Howard Hawks audaciously upend the hoary premise of gold diggers prowling a cruise ship and create a gloriously vulgar assault on 1950s-style propriety. Material girl Monroe delivers the film's signature musical number, "Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend." (91 mins., 35mm)

Next up, selected newsreels from UCLA's Hearst Metrotone News Collection show the star in varied situations. (12 mins., video) The Legend of Marilyn Monroe, which follows, combines in-depth research and testimony from friends and acquaintances to raise thoughtful questions about the screen idol's life and the precarious nature of fame. Narrated by John Huston; also with Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and Lee Strasberg. (53 mins., 16mm, print courtesy the UCLA Film and Television Archive)

The newsreels begin at 8:50 PM.
