Art Herstory
June 1, 2006–June 30, 2006
Catch a landmark, early feminist video in The Box this month. Long before Cindy Sherman's Film Stills and History Portraits there was Hermine Freed's Art Herstory. This classic of feminist video offers a humorous look at art history--in particular, the absence of women. Freed's work features the artist restaging and reinterpreting a series of famous paintings throughout history with herself taking the role of the model. The video was made through the TV Lab of Channel 13, a seminal workshop that allowed artists to experiment with broadcast-quality equipment and to create works that were radically different from other television programming of the time.
