Based on the ruthless novella by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, the wildly acclaimed Hour of the Star introduces us to Macabéa, a poor peasant girl from rural Brazil who heads to São Paulo for work after her aunt’s death. Saddled with a troubled job and even more troubled relationship, Macabéa eventually discovers that even the most outlandish dreams can come true.

This winner of the Berlin International Film Festival’s Best Actress Award (for Marcelia Cartazo’s unforgettable portrayal of Macabéa) was one of the most critically lauded Brazilian films of the 1980s, capturing rave reviews from star critics Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris. (96 mins., 35mm)
