In this evocative rumination on the history and theories of photography, Stephanie Barber uses white-on-white collage to make subtle recreations of well-know photographs by Uta Barth, Candida Hofer, Kohei Yoshiyuki, and Deborah Willis.
A computer-generated voiceover recites a series of statements on photography from an essay by Barber that was nominated for a Pushcart Prize (honoring the best new publications from small presses). (13 mins., video)
Barber is a multimedia artist whose work includes film, video, writing, and performance. Her films and videos have screened at numerous venues worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; the Anthology Film Archives, the Northwest Film Forum, Gene Siskel Film Center, the New York Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and Cinematheque Francaiset. Her performances have been featured at the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Milwaukee Museum of Art, San Francisco Cinematheque, and galleries and art spaces around the world. Her book poems was published in 2006 by Bronze Skull Press, and her recent book these here separated to see how they standing alone or the soundtrack to six films by stephanie barber was published in 2008 by Publishing Genius Press.
