Jayson Musson
ART THOUGHTZ with Hennessy Youngman: How to Make an Art

(2011)

Aug 1, 2013–Aug 31, 2013

ART THOUGHTZ is a web-based series of video works starring Jayson Musson’s “cousin” (and alter ego) Hennessy Youngman as a untraditional art critic.

Utilizing a satirical mash-up of art-world jargon and hip-hop slang, Youngman dispenses advice and insight to aspiring artists on a wide range of topics, including poststructuralism, Damien Hirst, and, in this work, the legacy of the readymade. Drawing in part on Musson’s experience as an MFA student—he earned his degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011—Youngman (aka “The Pharaoh Hennessy”) mixes comedic non sequiturs with deft criticisms of contemporary artistic trends, the art market, and critical practice.
