The first fiction film by French director Julie Bertuccelli (once assistant director to Bertrand Tavernier and Krzysztof Kieslowski), Since Otar Left... has won many international awards, including the prestigious Critics' Week Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The exquisitely bittersweet story follows three Georgian women—matriarch, daughter, and grand-daughter—living together in their stately but crumbling apartment in Tbilisi, the capital of the former Soviet republic. The drama turns on the grandmother's devotion to her absent son, Otar, now working in Paris, and how the women learn to cope without him. (102 mins.)
