Working with footage shot by Gus Van Sant during the production of his 1991 film My Own Private Idaho, actor and director James Franco creates an alternate version of the film that focuses mainly on the character played by the late actor River Phoenix.

Using outtakes and never-before-seen footage, Franco’s reedit is an intense and compelling portrait of Phoenix in a critically acclaimed role, as well as an homage from one young actor to another. With music by Michael Stipe of R.E.M. (102 mins., film transferred to DVD)
