Visiting Filmmaker: Natalia Almada

Mexican filmmaker Natalia Almada blends essay and documentary practice in a body of work that explores the rich intersections between memory, history, and personal perceptions and often illuminates specific aspects of Mexican culture and identity. Her work has screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Biennial, and this summer’s Documenta 13 exhibiiton. She is a 2008 Guggenheim Fellow.

El General documents the legacy of controversial Mexican President Plutarco Elias Calles, whose term (1924-1928) has been described as both a dictatorship and the beginning of modern Mexico. The great-granddaughter of the former president, Almada is in a unique position for examining the wide shadow he cast on her country and family. (83 mins, video).

Moving from the remote coast of Mexico to South Central L.A., Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side), examines issues surrounding the drug trade and immigration in the person of a corrido (Mexican folk music) composer who must choose between dealing drugs and illegally entering the U.S. in order to make a better life for himself.
