El General documents the legacy of controversial Mexican President Plutarco Elias Calles, whose term (1924-1928) has been described as both a dictatorship and the beginning of modern Mexico. The great-granddaughter of the former president, Almada is in a unique position for examining the wide shadow he cast on her country and family. (83 mins, video).

Moving from the remote coast of Mexico to South Central L.A., Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side), examines issues surrounding the drug trade and immigration in the person of a corrido (Mexican folk music) composer who must choose between dealing drugs and illegally entering the U.S. in order to make a better life for himself. (video).

Come back on Wednesday, September 26 for another double feature introduced by Natalia Almada.

Presented in conjunction with Ohio State’s Hispanic Heritage Month and Multicultural Center.
