Notre Musique

Jean-Luc Godard, 2004

Notre Musique, legendary director Jean-Luc Godard's latest, is also his most emotionally affecting film in years. Notre Musique invokes Dante's Inferno to consider basic questions of human nature after the 20th century's record of warfare and barbarism. Mixing fiction and nonfiction, color and black-and-white sequences, the film moves from Hell, realized here in a brilliant montage of archival images of armed struggle, to the Purgatory of a literary conference in present-day Sarajevo depicting Godard himself in conversation with a French-Jewish journalist based in Israel, to the surreal, serene Paradise of a beach in Rolle, Switzerland, apparently being guarded by American Marines. The journey is set to a stunning musical soundtrack ranging from Jean Sibelius and Peter Tchaikovsky to Meredith Monk and Arvo Part. (80 mins.)
