The first Rogers & Hammerstein musical to be adapted for the movies, Oklahoma! was nominated for four Oscars and won for Best Score and Best Sound. Filled with timeless songs (such as “Oklahoma” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”), fine singers, and innovative choreography (by Agnes de Mille), the film is a joyous celebration of frontier life as a menacing ranch hand (Rod Steiger) threatens to stand between a good-natured cowboy (Gordon MacRae) and the farmer’s daughter (Shirley Jones) that he loves. Two different versions of Oklahoma! were filmed simultaneously: one in the conventional 24 frames per second and the other in a 30 frames per second format called Todd-AO. Thanks to digital technology and a new restoration, the superior 30 frames per second version is available again for the first time in decades. (145 mins., 4K DCP)
