The Quay Brothers Introduce Freaks
The Quay Brothers
(Tod Browning, 1932)
Rising stars and acclaimed masters come to screen their films and talk with Wexner Center audiences.
Pioneering filmmakers, and identical twins, best known for their stop-motion animated films (The Epic of Gilgamesh, 1985; Street of Crocodiles, 1986; and many others), the Quay Brothers have also produced an astonishingly diverse body of work in graphic design, commercials, music videos, feature films, and a host of other media-based creations. The brothers, who are based in London, are recipients of the Wexner Center Artist Residency Award in film/video for 2013–14. They will be working in residence in the Film/Video Studio in October, putting the finishing touches on their latest short film, Unmistaken Hands: Ex Voto F.H. We’re thrilled to feature them in two public events in conjunction with their residency, especially on the heels of their summer 2012 visit to the center and the acclaimed retrospective of their work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Special thanks to Edward Waisnis, Pro Bono Films, for his assistance.
We asked the Quay Brothers to pick one of their favorite horror films to help celebrate Halloween. Their selection? One of the most notorious films in history: Tod Browning’s Freaks. Dramatically cut upon release due to its shocking content and banned in the UK for decades, Freaks is set amidst a tightly knit band of circus sideshow performers and follows a beautiful trapeze artist who seduces and marries a beloved dwarf in the troupe for his money. (64 mins., 35mm)
