The Red Chapel

Mads Brügger, 2009

Part Borat, part Lars von Trier’s The Five Obstructions, The Red Chapel (produced by von Trier’s Zentropa company) documents a Danish film crew and two Danish comedians of Korean descent who travel to North Korea in an attempt to show up the repressive dictatorship by staging a series of outlandish, scatological performances.

The fact that one of the performers has cerebral palsy only intensifies matters in a country where people with any disability are all but invisible. It's a fascinating picture of a country rarely depicted in any media, and the relationships between the subjects are filled with unexpected turns. (88 mins., video)
