More Than Meets the Eye: Remaking Jane Fonda
As part of the Wexner Center’s 25th anniversary, The Box is dedicating the entire year of programming to work produced in the Film/Video Studio. Screenings in this free exhibition space for video, located just across from the Wexner Center Store, run continuously seven days a week, the same hours as our ticket office (Mon–Wed: 9 AM–6 PM; Thu–Fri: 9 AM–8 PM; Sat: 10 AM–8 PM; Sun: 11 AM–6 PM).
Scott Stark's updating of More Than Meets the Eye is just as funny as his original version but creates a stronger personal and cultural context through which to examine ideas of gender, war, and cultural and political shifts.
In 2001, Stark filmed himself exercising to the famous Jane Fonda workout tape in a variety of public and private settings. The resulting video was conceptually complex and hilariously deadpan in execution. Last year--several years into another unpopular war--Stark felt compelled to revisit the video. He added selections of Fonda's more provocative quotes from the Vietnam era, as well as thoughtful excerpts from her recent autobiography. The revised version is just as playful but now has an added dimension. Instead of satire, it becomes a touching tribute to a self-described "lightning-rod," Jane Fonda. (20 mins., video)
