Seven Men from Now

Legendary director (and Ohio State varsity athlete in the 1930s) Budd Boetticher reinvented the Western in the 1950s with his stark, psychologically subtle character studies. Budd Boetticher is especially known for a series of seven films he made with the iconic actor Randolph Scott. In Seven Men from Now—the first film of the series and one of the best—Scott's aging sheriff seeks revenge against seven bandits responsible for his wife's death. (1956; 78 mins.)

Boetticher's astonishing films have recently drawn renewed attention, including a tribute by the New York Film Festival in 2000. He died last December at 85.
