“Ringbom finds fascinating subjects…each of whom deserves his or her own film.”—Now Magazine

A revolution is taking place in the changing climate of South Africa as artists, musicians, and designers tackle issues of politics, race, and history. This new documentary by Petter Ringbom (who codirected the video Questions for My Father, featured in The Box in June 2012) follows some of the most recognized artists in South Africa today, exploring what it means to live and work in the relatively new, 20-year-old democracy. The artists are faced with lawsuits and death threats as they take on issues that range from politics to hate crimes against the LGBT community and as they address the need for social services, such as creating after-school programs for kids. Shield and Spear presents their intimate stories while offering us an up-to-the-minute picture of art, music, identity, race, and freedom of expression in this still-evolving country. Executive producer (and Ohio State alumnus) Marquise Stillwell will introduce the film. (88 mins., DCP)
