“Utterly beautiful! Takes the road movie to places I never anticipated.”—Stuart Klawans, The Nation

Centered on a unique road trip, Silent Souls is a brooding, poetic, and hauntingly beautiful meditation on myth, memory, and ritual. When Miron’s beloved wife passes away, he asks his best friend to help him say goodbye to her according to the fantastic rituals of his ancestors, members of the Merja culture, an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe. As the two travel the evocatively bleak landscape of west-central Russia, Miron, according to custom, fills the hours relating the most intimate details of his relationship with his wife. Full of mystery and melancholy, this exquisite, elemental film drolly creates and captures a lost world. (75 mins., 35mm)
