Perhaps one of the simplest videos by Michael Snow, a protean titan of art-making practices spreading from film to music to visual arts, Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) contains a cosmos of mystery and wonder.

An hour-long fixed-camera shot of the fluttering curtains at the artist’s summer cabin in Newfoundland documents the effect of the “wind performance” on the curtains. Through a seemingly impossible choreography of stillness and movement, the transfixing phenomenon on view turns the natural world into art. (62 mins., video)

Catherine Opie, Untitled #1, 2012
