Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert introduce The Last Truck

Dayton-area filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert introduce The Last Truck, a moving and intimate look at the closing of a General Motors factory, which was nominated for the 2010 Academy Award for documentary short.

It’s an unscripted drama of everyday Americans expertly rendered by Bognar and Reichert, whose previous film A Lion in the House (about the toll taken on families when a child has cancer), also documented real-life adversity and resilience. Shot over several months at the plant in Moraine, Ohio, the film shows the workers prepare themselves for life away from the factory, where many have worked virtually their entire adult lives, and consider a future with dim employment prospects due to the ongoing recession. Produced by HBO, the film gives a human, and humane, face to the national economic malaise. (40 mins., video)
