“Transcendent.… Completely absorbing…while you’re watching it, the rest of the world fades into irrelevance.”—New York Times

Beloved director Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose After Life was one of the most popular films ever screened at the Wexner Center, returns to the forefront of world cinema with Still Walking. This exquisitely detailed family drama shines with warmth and understanding and was among many critics favorites from last year’s Toronto, Tribeca, and San Francisco International Film Festivals. Lushly photographed, and with an expert script that incorporates elements of director Kore-eda's personal experience, Still Walking is a quiet pleasure unlike anything else you will see this year.

The plot takes as its point of departure the death of Junpei, the youngest son of the Yokoyama family, while rescuing another boy from drowning 15 years before the film begins. On the anniversary of his death, Junpei’s emaining siblings visit the quaint home of their parents with their families in tow. Over the course of a beautiful day, new relatives become acquainted while telling stories, squabbling over sizzling tempura, and performing an elegant graveside ritual for Junpei. Still Walking recalls the delicate splendor of Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story, as Kore-eda shows complete mastery of his characters while revealing the complex dynamics of an ultimately loving family with humor and warmth. (114 mins., 35mm)
