Now in his fifth decade of filmmaking, New Wave legend Jacques Rivette continues to create rigorously inventive cinema. His latest is The Story of Marie and Julien. The Story of Marie and Julien is the mysterious story of an aimless man trapped in an unusual triangle with two women, one whom he is blackmailing and one with whom he is sexually obsessed. Starring Emmanuelle Beart and Jerzy Radziwilowicz, Marie and Julien was to have starred Leslie Caron and Albert Finney in the 1970s, but Rivette abandoned the project two days into shooting, only to return to it nearly 20 years later. (150 mins.)
