4 Adventures of Reinette and MirabelleNEW 35MM PRINT Éric Rohmer, 1987
As our film heritage becomes more and more digitized, it is harder and harder for audiences to see important films in the manner in which they were originally meant to be presented: in a theater, on film, with an audience. Film History 101 is our modest attempt to keep this tradition alive. Once a month, we'll present a selection that transcends "classic" status to that of "essential"—films that are widely recognized as among the greatest the art of moving pictures has to offer.
Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.
"Rohmer’s ultimate masterwork. No film I can recall in years has provided such a profound insight into the human condition. A singularly ennobling episode in the history of cinema."—Andrew Sarris (on Summer)
Summer (whose French title translates as The Green Ray) is one of the late, great French New Wave filmmaker Éric Rohmer’s most intimate and spontaneous films and is frequently cited as among the greatest triumphs in his rich career. Rohmer and his frequent muse Marie Rivière created a fascinatingly complex heroine in Delphine, a newly single Parisian secretary who cannot find a companion for her summer vacation. Independent but insecure, she travels by herself and becomes fascinated by the elusive meteorological phenomenon "the green ray," which she associates with the idea of a life-changing moment of revelation. (98 mins., 35mm)
As a bonus, we’re also showing the charming 4 Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle, which Rohmer made while waiting to complete Summer. Something of a companion piece to that better-known film, 4 Adventures features several of the same cast members (including Rivière) and the first of its four episodes, entitled "The Blue Hour," echoes Summer's atmospheric event but in a lighter and larkier tone. (95 mins., 35mm)
4 Adventures stars at 8:45 PM.
