Double Feature

wex grid image fill

Tell Them Who You Are is Mark Wexler's attempt to understand his larger-than-life father, award-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler. The second half of the bill lets you see Haskell Wexler's work in The Loved One, Tony Richardson's adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh satire.

Second feature start time: 8:45 pm. As a cinematographer, Haskell Wexler has a reputation for brilliance, winning two Academy Awards and working with such giants as George Lucas, Elia Kazan, Mike Nichols, and Francis Ford Coppola. Now 82, Wexler was also a political activist, accompanying Jane Fonda to Vietnam during the height of the war.

Wexler's son Mark is himself an accomplished photojournalist and documentarian. In Tell Them Who You Are he produces an expansive and intimate portrait of his father through film clips and interviews with such collaborators as Jane Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Paul Newman, among many others. Mark Wexler provides a unique glimpse into Hollywood family ties in the context of a son's attempt to understand and reconcile himself with his larger-than-life father. (95 mins.)

The rarely seen The Loved One is based on Evelyn Waugh's satire of Southern California's funeral industry. The film's beyond-odd cast includes Robert Morse, Jonathan Winters, John Gielgud, Milton Berle, Tab Hunter, and Liberace. (Tony Richardson, 1965; 122 mins.)
