Austrian director Michael Haneke's Time of the Wolf is a harrowing account of the collapse of social relations in the wake of an unspecified mass disaster. The film stars Isabelle Huppert, who won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role in Haneke's The Piano Teacher (2001). Haneke's postapocalyptic thriller focuses on a woman (Isabelle Huppert) whose husband is brutally murdered and who's forced to flee into the countryside with her two children. Improvising in order to survive, they are unable to rely on other human beings, who are equally traumatized by cataclysm. As the Toronto Film Festival catalogue noted, "What is truly terrifying...about Haneke's representation of the time of the wolf is how closely it resembles our own."
