Classics

Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.

Claire Denis (35 Shots of Rum, White Material) brings her trademark cinematic sensuality and intimacy to the horror genre with this controversial and disturbing take on the vampire movie that is ripe for reappraisal. Indie icon Vincent Gallo stars as a moody scientist honeymooning in Paris with his bride, played by Tricia Vessey. He soon moves beyond lovemaking to satisfying a different kind of desire. Screening in a new 35mm print, this will be the third time we’ve brought back this extraordinary and polarizing film, which shockingly is still not available on DVD in the US. Also starring Béatrice Dalle and featuring a haunting score by Tindersticks. The Wexner Center screened a retrospective of Denis’s work in 2004. (101 mins., 35mm)

Jean Dubuffet, Vaches au pre (Cows in a meadow), 1954
