Classics

Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.

Winter Soldier documents a controversial 1971 meeting organized by Vietnam Veterans Against the War in which more than 100 veterans (including a young John Kerry) gathered to testify as part of an investigation into war crimes and atrocities.

Produced by a collective of notable documentary filmmakers including Barbara Kopple and David Grubin, Winter Soldier was lauded at the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals and throughout Europe. But it had almost no theatrical life in the U.S.--until now, when it is proving itself still thought-provoking and remarkably timely.

The name for the meeting, and the film, comes from a line in Thomas Paine's first Crisis Paper: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country. But he who stands by it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." (95 mins.)
