The romantic comedy Words and Pictures stars Clive Owen as an English instructor at an elite New England boarding school who finds himself at odds with (and attracted to, naturally) the new, Italian-born painting instructor, played by Juliette Binoche. As their attraction for each other blooms, the two battle over which is mightier in life—the pen or the brush—as well as with their own personal struggles: he’s a poet with serious writer’s block, and she has rheumatoid arthritis. This is the most recent feature from Australian director Fred Schepisi, whose other films include Roxanne, A Cry in the Dark, and Six Degrees of Separation, among others. (111 mins., DCP)
