Dr. Yuri Shevchuk of Columbia University discusses how Ukrainian cinema reflects the challenges Ukraine has faced over the last decade as it seeks to consolidate its cultural and political independence. The lecture is followed by a screening of The Firecrosser (Mykhailo Illienko, 2012), the improbable tale of a war hero who is released from a Nazi prison camp, branded a traitor, sentenced to the Gulag, and eventually becomes a the leader of an Indian tribe in Canada (110 mins., video).
