"Sublime...the greatest film about football ever made."--The Observer (U.K.)

After seeing the final cut of the film, French soccer god Zinedine Zidane commented: "I recognize myself in this portrait--it's really me and that's exactly what I live every day at work."

Weeks before the headbutt heard around the world, Zidane made his big-screen debut at the Cannes Film Festival in this sensational cinematic spectacle by visual artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. Shot during a Real Madrid match (against Villareal, in April 2005), the film runs the precise length of the game until Zidane leaves the field. The filmmakers placed 17 super-35mm and HD cameras throughout the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, all focusing solely on Zidane, who agreed to become the center of attention for this full-length feature.

Gordon and Parreno translate the relatively inconsequential match into a riveting viewing experience by the absolute focus maintained on Zidane as he goes about his business-concentrating, muttering, shouting, scoring. The memorable soundtrack includes the roar of the 80,000 fans in attendance, arranged and interpreted by Scottish band Mogwai. (35mm, 92 mins.)
