Noted writer, artist, curator, and teacher Christopher Stackhouse discusses how he situates his artistic practice and production within the conditions of contemporary American art and literature. Stackhouse’s poems, essays, interviews, and reviews have been published in dozens of literary journals and arts periodicals, including Modern Painters, Art in America, and The Brooklyn Rail.
Stackhouse is the author of a chapbook, Slip; coauthor of an image/text collaboration, Seismosis, featuring his drawings alongside text by writer/translator John Keene; and most recently, the author of a volume of poems, Plural. His writing has also appeared in EOAGH, Octopus Magazine, Aufgabe, Hambone, The Volta, Reverie: Midwest African American Literature, American Poet, and MAKE: A Literary Magazine, among many other publications. Stackhouse is contributing editor at FENCE, BOMB, and VANITAS magazines. With artists Jomar Statkun and Jared Friedman, Stackhouse is a founding member of the roving artists-in-residence project This Red Door, which has just completed its third iteration in the Prenzlauer Berg section of Berlin. Stackhouse has received recent academic appointments at the Naropa University Summer Writing Program (in Boulder, Colorado) and at the Leroy E. Hoffberger School of Painting and Maryland Institute College of Art (both in Baltimore).
