Waste Land WorldView Screening

(Lucy Walker, 2010)

WorldView: Brazil

Every thinking mind needs a world view. This half-day seminar for students grades 9–12 builds on the cross-cultural understandings and perspectives that engage and influence many contemporary artists. Taking inspiration from the center-wide Via Brasil initiative, this year’s program features two enlightening films, Wasteland (Feb 13) and Doméstica (Feb 20), and the exhibition Cruzamentos: Contemporary Brazilian Art, on view at the Wexner Center February 1–April 20, 2014.

Both film screenings are followed by an open-forum panel discussion with special guests to be announced. Each student should bring their own brown bag lunch; we will provide drinks and a snack. Note that the exhibition tour does not include lunch.

You may choose one, two, or all three experiences for your program. Bus subsidies are available. Visit the WorldView blog at wexworldview.edublogs.org for teaching and learning resources.

Via Brasil

Via Brasil is the Wexner Center’s multidisciplinary initiative focusing on contemporary art and culture in Brazil made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Waste Land follows artist Vik Muniz as he travels back to his native Brazil to capture the lives of people who live and work in and around Jardim Gramacho, the largest landfill in the world. His creative journey highlights compelling social, environmental, cultural, and economic issues still relevant to understanding the region. (99 mins.)

Saintseneca

No tickets remain for Columbus-based indie-folk band Saintseneca, who will celebrate their Dark Arc album release at the Wex on Apr 19.

Hateship Loveship

Join us on May 2 as director Liza Johnson introduces a special advance screening of her new film Hateship Loveship (starring Kristen Wiig).
