Terri Francis and Ja’Tovia Gary in Conversation

Live Q&A | Feb 25

Virtual | Cinema Revival

In this Cinema Revival conversation, artist and filmmaker Ja’Tovia Gary and Black Film Center/Archive Director Dr. Terri Francis discuss the importance of film preservation in rethinking (or demolishing) the film canon, inspiring contemporary artists, and enlightening future generations about our cultural histories.

Catch the conversation live at 7 PM EST on February 25—a Q&A with Gary and Francis follows. The entire presentation will be available on this page afterward.

Artist and filmmaker Ja’Tovia Gary examines stories of Black life through documentary and experimental video, incorporating vintage footage in work such as An Ecstatic Experience (2015) and The Giverny Suite (2020). In 2017, she was named one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine, and her work has been screened at festivals and museums around the world.

In addition to her role in the Black Film Center/Archive, Terri Francis is associate professor in The Media School at Indiana University in Bloomington and the author of Josephine Baker’s Cinematic Prism, due in early 2021 from Indiana University Press.
