Explore questions of Black inheritance and generational wisdom through Jon-Sesrie Goff’s After Sherman, introduced by the filmmaker.

Filmmaker Jon-Sesrie Goff returns to the South Carolina land that has been in his family since its purchase after their emancipation in the 1860s. From a desire to better understand his Gullah/Geechee roots comes an entrancing documentary exploring ideas of Black inheritance, generational wisdom, and collective history. Shifting from the personal to the expressionistic (with striking collage animations by Cinetracts ’20 contributor Kelly Gallagher), the film remains defiant and questioning as cross-generational conversations slam into present-day threats of gentrification and white supremacist hate crimes. (91 mins., DCP)
