“A powerful trumpeter, at ease with the most complicated and detailed bebop lines and an open-armed Armstrong swagger.”—New York Times

Here’s another standout concert programmed in conjunction with the Blues for Smoke exhibition, which examines the blues and blues culture as a touchstone and point of departure in the arts. These two sets led by charismatic jazz trumpeter Byron Stripling—artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra—reach back to the music of some of his early inspirations like Lee Morgan and Kenny Dorham to illuminate how the blues roots of jazz were vibrantly present in the music that sprang from bop.

With Bobby Floyd grooving on the Hammond organ, Dan Faehnle on guitar, and Jeff Hamilton manning the drums, Byron Stripling will delight his many local fans in this intimate showcase for his talents as a thrilling player and skilled bandleader. The galleries will be open late until 9:30 pm this night with free admission to Blues for Smoke for all concert ticket holders, so feast your eyes on the exhibition before you open your ears to some soulful jazz from the Byron Stripling Quartet.
