Findlay//Sandsmark o’death

Enter into a haunting shadow world studded with ghostly towers lit from within—an otherworldly sci-fi dreamscape—in this mesmerizing performance installation work by the Norwegian American ensemble Findlay//Sandsmark. Referencing Reverend J. M. Gates’s fiery sermon and gospel song “Oh! Death, Where Is Thy Sting?” (1926), this powerful production combines the dark vision of Wooster Group alum and director/designer Iver Findlay’s beautifully bleak stage pictures with movement concepts created and performed by choreographer Marit Sandsmark.

In this strikingly apocalyptic landscape punctuated by whispery drones, the deep rumble of cataclysm, and the rustling of branches and dead leaves, Sandsmark emerges as a solitary figure seeking refuge. Notes of redemption and rebirth are nonetheless apparent, providing hope amid the forlorn structures and volcanic sounds. Perhaps all is not lost, even among what might be taken as signs of the End Times. Throughout this evocative performance, Findlay//Sandsmark attempts to prove that death is nothing and love only the beginning. This immersive experience—flickering with menace, foreboding in atmosphere, and timely in its resonance—is one you’ll not soon forget.
