“Leftfield, modern classical…that not only impresses, but totally enthralls.”—Drowned in Sound

Icelandic composer and performer Jóhann Jóhannsson is a cofounder of the Reykjavík-based Kitchen Motors—an influential arts collective whose intersection of smart indie sounds and contemporary chamber music has inspired Sigur Rós and Björk, among others. Jóhannsson’s atmospheric soundscapes have been enlisted by a series of filmmakers, including Bill Morrison, and choreographers, such as Erna Ómarsdóttir, to establish mood and propel their productions for stage and screen, and he continues to create scores for his own ensembles and like-minded collaborators, such as American Contemporary Music Ensemble. The ensemble, who have worked with bands like Grizzly Bear and Low, is a mainstay at Le Poisson Rouge, the NYC club that anchors the indie/classical crossover scene stateside. Ideal partners, Jóhannsson and American Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform selections from the composer’s elegantly haunting and contemplative postclassical work in our acoustically superb and intimate Performance Space.
